CustomData on SQL Server connection string?

Analysis Services has a CustomData connection string property. You can put anything on it, then inside an MDX query you can use the CustomData() function to retrieve whatever was on the connection string. This is helpful for passing in a security token.

Is there anything equivalent for SQL Server?

I also posted this here, but got no response so thought I'd check in the security forum.

I'm not sure that there is a property which is exactly suited for passing custom user data, but there is a property which you might modify without affecting pretty much anything else.

The property is "Application Name" (SSPROP_INIT_APPNAME).

|||

I see where you're going with that, but is there a SQL function to detect the application name from the connection string of the currently connected person?

|||

Hi,

What you can do to get the application name provided in the property is to run a statement like this:

select program_name from master..sysprocesses where spid=@.@.spid

Custom task database connection

I'm developing a custom error task for SSIS. I've got a couple of existing OLE DB connections that exist in the Connection Manager. I want a drop down to be displayed in the Custom Task dialogue properties where the user can select one of the databases from the Connection manager.

2 questions:
1. How can i get the list of OLE DB databases in the properties dialogue?
2. Does anyone have a code sample on accessing a database like that within the custom component?Try this post http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=122993&SiteID=1

I don't think you can use an OLE-DB connection directly in managed code. You may (I haven't tried) be able to read off the connection string and use that to create your own ADO.net connection. I have been using ADO.Net connections myself, normally SQL, which gives you a SqlClient.SqlConnection object.

|||Hi Darren,

I don't understand how the IDtsTaskUI.Initialize one ties in here? Also, do you have to tie in the connections within the Acquire Connection method?|||If you have a custom UI for your task then you will have implemented IDtsTaskUI.Initialize in the class that implements IDtsTaskUI.

You call AcquireConnection on the connection you want to get the real connection object. For a file connection that is just a string of the filename, for an ADO.NET connection type SQL, that is a SqlConnection. You would call this in your UI, and also at run-time in the Execute method.

Custom Source Component Problem?

Hi,I have developed a custom source component to get data from a generic odbc connection with some special caracteristics.

The component works fine by getting and mapping the output fields etc...

The only two problems existing are that when i run the task it says that the data flow has no components inside... how is this possible since i have my source mapped to a flat file inside that data flow?

This is the error:

SSIS package "BVEIT000D.dtsx" starting.

Warning: 0x80047034 at BVEIT000D_<EMPRESA> TXT, DTS.Pipeline: The DataFlow task has no components. Add components or remove the task.

Information: 0x4004300C at BVEIT000D_<EMPRESA> TXT, DTS.Pipeline: Execute phase is beginning.

SSIS package "BVEIT000D.dtsx" finished: Success.

The other problem is that if i want to <ignore> a certain source column the component already shows me an error saying that the no column with ID 0 was found...

Any one with experience in creating custom components?

Regards,

Hi Luis,

I might be able to help you but I need some more information. Are you creating the package using the Designer or programatically? Do you get an error when adding the component to the data flow?

It's hard for me to determine what is going on without seeing the package. Could you post more information about how you're adding the component to the package?

Jason
|||

Yes i am creating the package using the designer and no error is ocurring... everything works just fine...

I add the component and the file destination i set my component sql to return the fields i map the fields to the file component and then when i run the task it simply says that my data flow doenst have components? Jesus...

I hope you can help me here!

Regards,

|||Have you tried creating a new empty package and adding a Data Flow and your custom source?

|||

Yes, same thing happens...

This is very very weird...

|||I agree.

Could you post the DtsPipelineComponent attribute settings you are using?

It might help to see your actual package too. If you want, you can send it to me at jason.gerard AT idea.com

|||

Ok this is my attribute settings:

<DtsPipelineComponent(DisplayName:="WV ODBC Generic Source", Description:="Data Flow Task that allows you to freely return data based on a SQL Statement against a Generic ODBC Connection", ComponentType:=ComponentType.SourceAdapter, IconResource:="WorldVision.LuisSimoes.SQLServer2005.DataFlow.Sources.WVODBCSource.ico")> Public Class WVODBCSource

Inherits PipelineComponent

I think is pretty normal...

As for the component i sent it by email to you.

Custom Data Extension to SQL Server

Where I work we have custom code to retrieve the connection string. Theprogrammer provides a role and a mode and a connection object isretured. I need similar functionality from Reporting Services and I'mnot sure where to start. I was thinking of passing the role and mode inas username and password under credentials and being able to use thisas my connection to get data for reports. Any help in solving thisproblem would be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server Reporting services is part of SQL Server so you can create roles either with stored procedure or under permissions in Enterprise manager. Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Gift Peddie

|||Sorry but you did not understand my post. Please read before replying.As I said we have custom code that we pass a role and mode to that willgive us the CONNECTIONSTRING.
Ryan
|||

Sorry maybe the link below could help.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/secmod/html/secmod12.asp

Kind regards,

Gift Peddie

|||I have figured it out and that link doesn't relate to the problem.
I figured out how to do a custom data extension but I am getting astack overflow exception when I try using the extension. I am alsogetting a SecurityPermission exception when I try calling a functionthat uses interop code. So anyone with any ideas to either of theseproblems would be appreciated.

Custom data extension

hello,
I'm implementing a data extension and I need to have the connection "edit"
button available (since I'm using a connection to SqlServer). I don't see
any property/member from IDbConnection and IDbConnectionExtension.
Thanks,
Pierre

---The connection "edit" button is disabled for custom data extensions by
design, because the Data Link dialog requires an OLEDB connection string and
logic is built into the designer that can translate the connection strings
for our standard provider types to these OLEDB connection strings. This
cannot be done for a general custom extension, because in a custom
extension, a connection string can be anything.
We are considering adding support for custom connection string builder
dialogs that will be tied to the Edit button in a future release.
For now, you will have to manually enter your connection string in the Data
Source dialog.

Custom Connection Manger Doesn't Show Up In VS

I have created a custom connection manager and it was showing up fine as was the UI I created for it. For some reason now no matter what I do I cannot get it to show up in the list when right-clicking and choosing New connection...

I have also created two custom tasks. One of them works perfectly. The second was working but now causes an error when you open the package. Here is the error message:

TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio

There were errors while the package was being loaded.
The package might be corrupted.
See the Error List for details.

There are no additional errors in the list only this one. I have tried everything I can think of to fix these two issues. Both problems emerged at the same time so may be related but that would not explain why the second custom task I have created works fine and doesn't cause errors.

Help!

Thanks,

Dave

1. CM: have you defined a public class with DtsConnection attribute that defines ConnectionType and other properties? Once you do it, install the assembly to GAC and DTS\Connections folder, then restart SSIS service.

2. Hard to diagnose remotely :) Try attaching debugger to DevEnv.exe process, and monitor first-chance exceptions - this usually gives the hint of what's wrong.

|||I've seen that error when the task is either not installed correctly (GAC + DTS\Tasks folder) or you have changed something such that the XML will have changed, e.g. Added a new property and not handled it in Upgrade.|||

EUREKA!!

I found the problem for the errors I was receiving on my custom task.

While the SSIS persistance framework can cope with simple data type properties on your custom task, it cannot copy with things as mundane as string or integer arrays but there are no errors at design time!

It recognizes the array properties and even gives you the nice builder for them in the properties window. You can click Save and then close the package all without incident. When you reopen the package, it carks it because it can't load the values for those properties. No error saying that that is the problem. All you see is the error message that is in my original post.

Where can I file a bug report/feature request to have this fixed? It has cost me nearly a week trying to figure it out.

Dave

|||

You can make request and report bugs at http://connect.microsoft.com

If you roll your own load and save methods you can handle it quite happily, just implement IDTSComponentPersist.

Custom Connection Manager or SSIS Provided one?

Hi,

I have been working with a client on a legacy application migration to SSIS and I found SSIS to be very helpful, as this is my first project using integration services I found myself in a situation where multiple solutions can work but I cannot assess the risk of using one or the other and the effort required for the implementation.

The situation is as following, we cannot touch the input files that come from the other legacy systems so I need to get information that is packaged following the next multipart schema:

&Header with context information from the source
&BatchHeader with context information from the batch (including format N)
- Data in format N
&BatchHeader with context information from the batch (including format K)
+Data in format K
&BatchHeader with context information from the batch (including format P)
=Data in format P

Etc... Needless to say that they can come in whatever order and they need different processing depending on the format. I have been tempted to use the techniq shown in "Handling Different Row Types In The Same File" from http://www.sqlis.com/default.aspx?54.

However, there are multiple issues that I have to resolve to do that: First is how to feed the pipeline with the Data in format N and then reparse them in an easy way cause the data that comes from the other system is very wide (aprox 120 columns), so using a parsing script is by no means a viable solution (I have multiple formats to handle). So I do not see a way to treat the data without using a Custom Connection Manager. Here comes my first question: Is there anyway someone can use the already provided managers to handle an scenario like this one?

Next comes the separation, which one is the wisest thing to do: Write again that to disk in as easier format or pass along that information to the next task in memory? The volume of data is in the order of hundreds of megabytes (100 to 200), maybe half a Gigabyte in the extreme cases. How about uploading that to SQL Server and work from there?

BTW, the production servers will have 6 to 8 Gb of memory and 4 to 8 processors (more or less).

Thanks in advance.

Federico

Hi, I am not sure I understand your questions.

>>>> First is how to feed the pipeline with the Data in format N and then reparse them

The concept show in the article loads the whole row as 1 column to get the data into the pipeline and then you make decissions and parse from there. The article shows using script components to parse but you could also just use a derived column transform and the expression syntax, it all depends on the complexity of splitting your file. My guess is the trick in your case is identification of the rows. Is there something that can identify each row?

File header (multiple rows?)
K_BatchHeader (multiple rows?)
K_rows
P_BatchHeader (Multiple Rows?)
P_rows
...
...

Or is the only way you know K rows for sure is they follow the KBatchHEader and precede some other header?
Could be a multi step approach is best. One to "Split" parse to the source files to individual file formats (k,p,N) and another to read those files and do the actual data processing. This way, the 2nd process can likely use the built in parsing features.

|||

What I can suggest is an approach.

Creating a custom connection manager won't do any good here because connection managers are agnostic to the Dataflow task. What you need is a custom source adapter...

Or, in certain cases you can use the flat file adapter to read in the file row by row and use a script transform to do the parsing.

The best thing to do is to create a custom source adapter. You'll have much more control and the solution will ultimately be more robust.

K

|||although a custom source component will do the trick, a script component may suffice.|||

Thanks Craig, you understood correctly :)

In fact the solution you propose is what I am going to implement because I could be able to get a sample of the format (what I had until this point was the functional extraction of the legacy Cobol programs) and the rows format is not even normalized. So the problem now reduces to Normalize the file format (where I can split it with a custom task) and then do the Staging on the database and further processing.

So in fact I am moving toward your solution ;)

Again, thanks for the help.

Greetings
Federico Andrs Lois

|||

Yeah I used the wrong name, I meant a source adapter :)

As I wrote to Craig, I am moving toward a prenormalization and splitting in a task just because I found the data wasnt as clean as I though (regarding the format) so it will be required a normalization step before that.

Thanks too for the response.

Greetings
Federico Andrs Lois

Custom connection manager doesn't show up in VS?

I've created a very simple custom connection manager, and I followed the deployment instructions at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345276.aspx. Basically, that was just copying the assembly to %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Connections, and then registering the asssembly in the gac.

However, when I open VS, right-click on the connection manager pane, and then choose new connection, my custom manager does not appear. What am I missing?

Here is the class:

using System;

using System.Collections.Generic;

using System.Text;

using Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime;

using System.Data.SqlClient;

using System.Xml;

namespace MyCoolCompany

{

[DtsConnection(DisplayName="Sharepoint Connection Manager",

ConnectionType="Sharepoint",

ConnectionContact="My Cool Company",

UITypeName="SPDataFlowComponent, MyCoolCompany.SharepointConnectionManagerUI")]

class SharepointConnectionManager: ConnectionManagerBase

{

}

}

this is because your class is SharepointConnectionManager private

The code should be:

public class SharepointConnectionManager: ConnectionManagerBase

|||Oh, duh :( It's always the simple things that kick my butt! Thanks a lot for that.|||

I have follwed the instruction from MSDN exactly, I can see my cusom connection manager listed with the others.

But when I have to add it to the Package, an error occured indicating, that the "connectionType" can not be found.

The samples from SSIS including 2 connection managers work properly, but with a different connectiontype do not.

Please help, what I should do exception to that what is on MSDN .

Thand you

|||

What is the value for the connection type attribute property you have set?

What is the full error? What exactly are you doing at the time of the error?

|||

Thank you for the response.

I have written a Customo Connection Manager, with the Type provided in the Class-Attribue "Outlook",

and the following Error was occurred, when I want to add it to the Package :

For the connecting manager '{1E4D8049-5916-4034-A298-C702CAC1F3CB' given Outlook-connecting type is not recognised as a valid connection manager's type. This mistake is returned if a connecting manager is provided for an unknown connecting type. Check whether you have properly given the name of the connecting type. (Package)

And these are the calls from the SSIS-Designer:

bei Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper.IDTSConnections90.Add(String bstrConnectionType)
bei Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Connections.Add(String connectionType)

my Code is as follow :

[

DtsConnection(ConnectionType = "Outlook",

DisplayName = "OutlookConnectionManager",

Description = "An Outlook Connection Manager",

IconResource = "Oraylis.Dts.ConnectionManagers.OutlookConnManagerIcon.ico")

]

public class OutlookConnManager : ConnectionManagerBase

{

}

public override void ReleaseConnection(object connection)

{

}

public override DTSExecResult Validate(IDTSInfoEvents infoEvents)

}

The connection manager should at the moment do nothing, just to be inserted in the Package.

Custom connection manager development sample?

Does anyone has code/sample/tutorial/pointer to developing custom connection manager with a custom UI. And then developing a custom task with a custom UI that can point to this custom connection manager... and passing values during runtime from UI to the custom class.

Custom connection manager development sample?

Does anyone has code/sample/tutorial/pointer to developing custom connection manager with a custom UI. And then developing a custom task with a custom UI that can point to this custom connection manager... and passing values during runtime from UI to the custom class.

TIA,
NiteshThe first updated Web release of BOL will contain one sample that works with SQL Server and simply asks for server name...a kind of "Hello World" version of what you're asking for.

The second Web release next spring will contain a second sample, a replacement Excel connection manager that includes a checkbox for Import Mode to resolve the common "mixed data types" issue.

The code is too long to post in the forum, but if you'll provide an email address, I can send you one or both.

It's pleasantly simple, relatively speaking, the the UI methods are almost identical from task to data flow component to connection manager, so what you learn will also be portable.

Custom Assemblies and Accessing report parameters

I am trying to access the datasource's parameters (connection string etc) via
the report, and passing these parameters to a custom assembly at the end of
the report, with the intention of firing off a stored procedure from this
assembly.
The assembly is done, but the connection string is hard coded.
Is there anyway of accessing these parameters direct from the report, or an
interface I can implement to achieve this?Please see my response on your other thread with the same title.

Custom assemblies and accessing report parameters

I am trying to access the datasource parameters (connection string etc)
through the report with the intention of using them to fire off a stored
procedure at the end of the report. The parameters will be passed to a custom
assembly will execute the sp to update several status flags in the database.
The assembly is done and updates the status parameters, however the
connection string is currently hard coded.
Is there any way to access these parameters direct from the report, or an
interface I could implement in my assembly that would allow me access to them?Please see my response on your other thread with the same title.

Custom Assemblies and accessing report connection parameters

I am trying to access the datasource connection properties (connection string
etc) from a report -I will be accessing the information via a custom
assembly, or passing it to a custom assembly with a view to firing a stored
procedure at the end of the report in order to update a number of status
flags including the last page number of a report. The custom assmbly's done,
but has a hard coded connection string - I need to get at the reports
connection string so I fire the sp in the same db as the report's bound to.
Is there any way of accessing this information direct from the report or an
interface I can implement to retrieve it?No, you cannot access this information on RS 2000. The closest you can get
to have this configurable is to add a hidden parameter (requires RS 2000
SP1) and pass this parameter to the custom assembly.
