Customized Delivery Extension
write the stream renderedoutputfile[] to a file on the server. When I
write it to a file, the file is blank with a bunch of spaces in it. Do
I need to decode the Stream? Any help would be great.
Here is the code I am using.
This is inside the Delivery Method..
deviceInfo = String.Format(@."<DeviceInfo><OutputFormat>{0}</OutputFormat></DeviceInfo>","PDF");
// Render report
files = notification.Report.Render("PDF",deviceInfo);
BinaryReader br = new BinaryReader(m_files[0].Data);
byte[] byteData = new byte[(int)m_files[0].Data.Length];
int j = br.Read(byteData,0, (int)m_files[0].Data.Length);
FileStream fst = new FileStream(@."c:\temp\test.pdf", FileMode.Append,
FileAccess.Write);
BinaryWriter writer = new BinaryWriter(fst);
writer.Write(byteData,0,byteData.Length);
writer.Flush();
writer.Close();
What I am doing wrong? Code is in c#.Is it as simple as:
files = notification.Report.Render("PDF",deviceInfo);
=> note you're writing to local variable files
BinaryReader br = new BinaryReader(m_files[0].Data);
=> note you're reading from member variable m_files

Customize ReportViewer Animation
I am developing an application that queries a database for a large
amount of data. The SQL server is not local so the time to query the
data can take some time.
Once I have the data locally, I send it to the ReportViewer to display.
The ReportViewer then shows the "Processing" animation, and displays
the results quickly so the animation is shown for a breif period. The
problem is that it takes a long time to query for the data, but the
ReportViewer animation is only shown for the time it processes the
DataSet.
I was wondering if anyone had experience customizing the ReportViewer
control to prematurely start the ReportViewer "Processing..."
animation. I would like to start the animation before I query the
database for the data so the user is aware that something is happening
during the data query.
I would rather implement my own "Processing..." form, or progress bar,
but if there is no way to control the ReportViewer control animation
that is my backup solution.
Thank you,
bigcoopsDoes anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.

Customize Reportserver interface
Im currently developing various reports for my company. We have many
different clients and different reports for each client.
I want to develop a common website (just like reportserver) for all
the reports and through NT-logon redirect a client to his reports.
My question is: Is it possible to customize the reportserver interface
to do this? How ?Stefan wrote:

Look at http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/SQLRSViewer.asp
You have to modify this solution but it works great.

Custom task database connection
2 questions:
1. How can i get the list of OLE DB databases in the properties dialogue?
2. Does anyone have a code sample on accessing a database like that within the custom component?Try this post http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=122993&SiteID=1
I don't think you can use an OLE-DB connection directly in managed code. You may (I haven't tried) be able to read off the connection string and use that to create your own ADO.net connection. I have been using ADO.Net connections myself, normally SQL, which gives you a SqlClient.SqlConnection object.
|||Hi Darren,
I don't understand how the IDtsTaskUI.Initialize one ties in here? Also, do you have to tie in the connections within the Acquire Connection method?|||If you have a custom UI for your task then you will have implemented IDtsTaskUI.Initialize in the class that implements IDtsTaskUI.
You call AcquireConnection on the connection you want to get the real connection object. For a file connection that is just a string of the filename, for an ADO.NET connection type SQL, that is a SqlConnection. You would call this in your UI, and also at run-time in the Execute method.

Custom sort the dimension members
Hello users of SSAS2005!
I am in the funny position of developing a cube for (at least) three different user groups, and each need "their" special treatment. My problem is in sort order of one particular dimension. The dimension has 3 fields: ID (=person number), Firstname and Lastname - as simple as straightforward as it can be.
Now Finance wants it sorted by ID to relate it to their documents. Human resources needs it by last name, so it can be copy-pasted directly into their structures.
It gets really hilarious when IT needs it sorted by first name (not joking here) because an external application delivers correlating date sorted by first name (again, I am not making that up).
Since I cannot convience anyone onto one common sort I need to make all three possible sort orders available, and I might end up with having 3 identical dimensions or one dimension with 3 identical attributes (except for sorting)
We use Excel as our frontend, I know I can sort a cube there as well. This is, of course, if the field to base the sorting upon is dragged onto the same axis, but that is a bit clumsy too.
What is the "best practices" approach to such a funny situation? (Except for changing the company workflow, let's take that as ... sigh ... static.)
Hello Ralf! I am not sure that this is possible in SSAS/MDX.
One way to solve this is to make the SSAS 2005 reports in Reporting Services 2005.
Check Books On Line for dynamic sorting in reporting services. It is also possible to sort with parameters.
If you can only use Excel pivot tables you can make three different reports, each sorted according to each groups preference.
Publish them i Sharepoint(or any other portal).

Custom Report Item and Parameters in c#, how do I get them
Hi,
We are developing a custom report item but we cannot find a way to get the report parameters. In Vb examples there is mentioning of globals but these do not seem to be present in the c# enviroment.
Could anyone give a solution on how to get to the report parameter collection in run-time.
Thanks,
Arwin van der Laan
This may help you:
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.GetParameters();
|||
Greg,
Thanks for the help but it does not do the job as far as i can see.
Maybe this makes my question more clearly.
During the process event of the runtime part of the custom report item we need to hold a report wide string for state purposes, beside that one we need to get the user_id which we will add to the parameters requesting the report.
Arwin
|||Whether your code is written in C# or VB should have no bearing on this.
I've written a couple of custom report items. I am not sure whether you are writing a "custom report item" exactly, from what you are saying here, or a "custom report logic DLL (assembly)" for use in processing.
If the latter, can you check this thread http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1755679&SiteID=1, which I think may help you?
If the former, can you talk a bit about your report item's API, and what you're trying to do/what's not working for you?
>L<
|||
Lisa,
Thanks for your answere, I looked into the thread you referenced but I still can get what I want.
Below there is a sample of what we want to do, in het process event we want to get hold of the report parameters and some kind of report string variable so multiple report items can use it.
Code Snippet
public class ReportItemBasic : ICustomReportItem
{
private CustomReportItem m_CustomReportItem;
private Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportRendering.Image m_BasicImage;
private Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportRendering.ImageMapAreasCollection m_ImageMap;
protected static string propertyClass = "Basic";
public CustomReportItem CustomItem
{
set
{
m_CustomReportItem = value;
}
}
public ReportItem RenderItem
{
get
{
if (m_BasicImage == null)
{
}
Process();
}
// Get report parameters and extract user id and application autorisation
// string id_User = ...
// global:appAut = ........
return m_BasicImage;
}
Besides the fact that reporting services is a new area for us is that I am just started with c# (former delphi & vb).
Arwin
|||
Ah! The thread I sent you to will not help you because you really *are* using a custom report item, not doing custom report processing (I really wasn't sure before and very few people are doing the former <s>).
>> I am just started with c# (former delphi & vb)
It really is important to realize that you should be able to do this in whatever language you want, and that should include delphi.net <g>, but FWIW I think they test most everything of this nature in c# first <g>.
First, where is the vb sample that you are working from and trying to emulate? I think there was a custom report item in RS 2000 but it changed a lot so it's important to make sure you're not using an old sample, regardless of language.
Now, I have two mostly-separate things to tell you <s>:
1. I think the best way to do what you want to do is to use a custom property to hold the report parameters item you want.
I assume that you have been working from either the Polygons CRI sample or maybe the article by Teo Lachev in MSDN that is based on the Polygons sample? That's how I got started. You will see that the Polygons item has a custom property like this:
<CustomProperty>
<Name>polyPI</Name>
<Value>=Parameters!DPI.Value</Value>
</CustomProperty>
... so clearly it is one way to get access to the parameters. You will see other custom properties that are expressions basd on data elements in the report.
2. What you said about "so multiple report items can use it" happens to touch on a subject very near and dear to my heart with regard to custom report items. <s> I have posted something about what I have been working on here http://spacefold.com/articles/XMLRSDocs.aspx, but what you can't see in what I've written so far is the design choices that I made as a result of what a custom report item can and cannot do.
We can take this conversation off-line or off-forum if you like and I can be more specific. Basically as you'll see in what I've written already it is quite important in my scenario that one custom report item have some bearing on the rest of the report but it is not something that was envisioned by MS. In fact, I thought originally that I wanted to work solely on the Report level rather than using a customreportitem at all for what I wanted to do -- but this turned out to have its own difficulties. I haven't had a chance to write about this yet.
>L<
|||Lisa,
This was what I was looking for, thanks.
As far as the concept "so multiple report items can use it" is concerned, yes I am interested in the design choices and your point of view regarding custom report items.
Where do you propose to take the discussion off-forum? By e-mail or on spacefold.com?
Arwin
|||
You can contact me there (spacefold) and we'll continue e-mali as needed.
Either way, you can explain your reason to have one report item touch the lives of other ones -- I think mine is pretty clear in the docs for the utility I'm writing <s> -- and, I'll tell you what I know about the limitations that might affect you.
I do want to continue to write more stuff about this publicly, and if you are free to comment on it publicly, I would prefer to do that. I think that it will turn out to be generally helpful. I am sure that you and I are not the only people who have thought about this approach. But if we need to bring the discussion to e-mail I would certainly not divulge any details of your project in anything I write publicly. OK?

Custom Renderer doesn't show in VS report builder
from:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/05/02/CustomRenderers/
So far I can see it and run it as an export option when I run the
report from ReportManager. However it does not show as an option from
the vs.net report builder preview. Any suggestions as to how to make
this work?
Also I can't seem to debug into my renderer, any help with how to step
into this thing would be appreciated.
thanks-JimYou need to add it as a renderer in two different config files, one for
the Report Server, the other for the Report Designer.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Report
Designer\RSReportDesigner.config
I think is the file you still need to update|||Thanks Greg, that worked. For future reference with vs 2005 and sql
2005 the path was C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio
8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\RSReportDesigner.config. Of course I
had to put my custom dll there also.

Custom data processing logic
data processing before a report can be run. Please would someone advise me as
to the best place to put this custom data processing logic. Should I do it in
my app beforehand or is there an appropriate hook in the report processing
lifecycle?
Further info:
- The processing involves copying data to snapshot tables and then
enriching this data: the processing is complex and varies depending on the
user.
- We will use security extensions for Forms authentication and custom
authorization.
- We would like the user to be able to use the drill-down feature so would
want to use the web-based Report Viewer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
StuHello Stu,
Based on my experience, I suggest you to process your data first when your
user login or just after the login process.
After that, you could show the report.
My suggestion of the report view control is that you use the local report
in your application so that the report will use your custom authentication
and you do not need to customize the authentication in the report server.
All this is to avoid the slow performance of the report to the user.
Please let me know if you have any question.
Sincerely,
Wei Lu

application, do it in your application and get the final results to be
displayed, that will be faster, so RS will be used for reporting the end
results. Why the processing in your custom applications is that you get very
good flexibility like massaging the data, and filtering as per the user
etc... Finally the reporting part with layout, format, drilldown etc..can be
done using RS.

Custom Data Processing Extensions/Custom Data Providers
Hello!
I'm trying to understand the limitations that SSRS places on a developing reports involving multiple data sources and how I can possibly create a custom data provider for a report that will consolidate data from multiple data sources..
thanks in advance.
Doug.
If you want to see what is all involved in creating a Custom Data Processing extension, I used the FSI example that comes with the SQL Server install. It gives you a good idea of what needs to be involved.
I extended and added to it a great deal but the basis for what you need to do is in there. It's non-trivial, but very do-able.
|||I'll look into that!

|||Instead of implementing a data processing extension, you should look at the T-SQL OPENROWSET command
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190312.aspx
Or linking servers
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188279.aspx
These give you the ability to consolidate multiple data sources and it is a lot easier than implementing your own data processing extension to do the same. The only caveat is that it requires SQL Server.
|||We're using Oracle...so that kind of bites...
well, we've hit a snag in our development of our extension..
I cannot figure out why I get this exception when we try to generate a DataSet in our SSRS IDE:
A connection cannot be made to the database,
Set and test the connection string.
Additional Information:
The data extension FOCUS could not be loaded. Check the the configuration files RSReportDesigner.config(Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer)
We added the following to the RSReportDesigner.config file:
<Extension Name="FOCUS" Type="PPD.Focus.FocusDPE.FocusDbConn, PPD.Focus.FocusDPE"/>
And the dll's complete with the proper namespaces are all in the proper directories:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin\PPD.Focus.FocusDPE.dll
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\PPD.Focus.FocusDPE.dll
We've tried to step into the extension code using a techique outlined in MSDN without any luck. We've also attempted to write out errors the Event Viewer, but it doesn't even seem to get into the connection object,
Any Idea of where I'm going wrong?
thanks!

Custom Data Flow Component Column Mapping Question
Hi,
I'm having my first go at developing a destination adapter which will send data to an update Web Service.
I've got some rather big gaps in my understanding. I've been following the various samples I've found on the net and have validated my mapping and picked up all the available column names and datatypes which are appearing in the Input and Output Properties tab of the Advanced Editor but I only have a tab for "Input Columns" and not "Column Mappings".
Which method defines the availble columns for the user to map?
Let me know if I haven't given enough information.
cheers
sorry - I had searched already but somehow missed this post which answered my question: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=239126&SiteID=1
I was having the same confusion about input and output, thinking that because i was creating a *destination* adapter, that I should be creating outputs not inputs [if that makes sense].
Custom connection manager development sample?
TIA,
NiteshThe first updated Web release of BOL will contain one sample that works with SQL Server and simply asks for server name...a kind of "Hello World" version of what you're asking for.
The second Web release next spring will contain a second sample, a replacement Excel connection manager that includes a checkbox for Import Mode to resolve the common "mixed data types" issue.

The sample contains a Sample Ado source. How would i call a custom editor instead of Advanced Editor. Can you point me any help on that.

|||I assume you mean a custom UI for the component not connection. You follow a similar pattern to tasks, but inherit from IDtsComponentUI Interface.

The code is too long to post in the forum, but if you'll provide an email address, I can send you one or both.
It's pleasantly simple, relatively speaking, the the UI methods are almost identical from task to data flow component to connection manager, so what you learn will also be portable.
-Doug|||Okay, I see that you have provided an email address. I'll send them along.|||Hi DouglasL,

Custom Component - Change Data Type
What is the best approach to do this?
-DarrellUnless you want you component to have to copy data from the input to the ouput you can not do this. There are 2 types of outputs, synchronous and asynchronous. The synchronous one is simple and requires no data copying or column creation (except of course for the new column you would produce of the DT_DATE type). However, because of this you can't change column types and that is why the derived column doesn't allow this. The asynchronous one is complex. You have to create all the output columns and keep them in sync with the input columns and know how to map the input columns to the output columns so that you can copy the data to the correct place. My advise is use a sync output and live with the additional column unless it is absolutely necessary to use and async output.

Matt
