Customize Report Manager

I would like to use Report Managers interface for choosing reports.

But all of the reports uses different dsu(datasourceuser) and dsp(datasourcepassword) depending on which user that is logon.

I would like to call the interface from a webapplication(where they have the current dsu & dsp).

Is there a way to customize Report Manager to save the dsu & dsp so users don't have to login for each report?

Or could I make a clever transformation from the Windows userid?

Or any other ideas?

There is not much you can do to customize report manager. I would recommend using Visual Studio 2005 to create a web application.

Customize where clause c# (RDL)

We have may reports that need to customize the where clause based on
parameters entered by the end user. Is there a way to modify the RDL on the
fly in order to achieve this? I am using VS2005 and SQLServer 2005.
Example:
if user selects run report by week ending date the following line needs to
be used
"and we_dt between ? and ?
if the user selects the run the report by export date then the line changes
to:
"and export_dt between ? and ?You can handle this via expressions in the command text of the dataset.
It is much easier than modifying the RDL on the fly.
For example, you can use VB expressions in the command text to
something like this:
="SELECT field1, field2 FROM tblName WHERE " &
iif(Parameter!Param1.Value = something, "do between stuff", "don't do
between stuff")
Andy Potter|||We'll look into this, but what if the entire WHERE cluase needs to be modified?
Are there any good examples of people doing this? Either through changing
the RDL or passing the entire where clause into the report?
Thanks

Personally, I prefer this kind of logic in a stored procedure. I find
large expressions to handle string manipulation to be a bit unwieldy.
The other option to handle large string manipulation is the custom code
section of the report, which give you a little more flexibility as far
writing your string manipulation code.

Customize the reporting services interface display reports.

Hello:
We are using the reporting services interface to display reports. By using
the security we restricted some access and everything works fine.
Now we would like to change the way the parameters prompt works.
Is there any way of applying styles to the pages rendered by the reporting
server?
Thanks,
Daniel Bello.You can modify the RSReportServer.config file to specify a custom style
sheet for HTML Viewer. The <HTMLViewerStyleSheet> setting is not included in
the file by default. You must type it into the <Configuration> selection of
the RSReportServer.config file and then specify the style sheet you want to
use. Do not include the .css file extension when specifying the style sheet.
The following example provides an illustration of how to specify the style
sheet:
<Configuration>
...
<HTMLViewerStyleSheet>MyStyleSheet</HTMLViewerStyleSheet>

Customize Reportserver interface

Hi,
Im currently developing various reports for my company. We have many
different clients and different reports for each client.
I want to develop a common website (just like reportserver) for all
the reports and through NT-logon redirect a client to his reports.
My question is: Is it possible to customize the reportserver interface
to do this? How ?Stefan wrote:

Look at http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/SQLRSViewer.asp
You have to modify this solution but it works great.

customizable report model ?

Hi friends
we created report model for our clients to create reports using report builder which works fine.
we have a situation now , as we've different clients for e.g.,individual doctors, hospitals etc.,
so we need to have smart report model which hides some entities/attributes if client is individual doctors or hospitals.
what i mean some entities and attributes are unique to a particular type of client. so we want to hide some entities/attributes based on client type .
is it possible.?
Thanks for ur help.
we are using sql server 2005 standard edition.

You can use model item security to control the visibility of various entities and attributes to different sets of users.

I have an article on my blog that goes into some depth on how to do this.

Customising home page (reports/pages/folder.aspx)

hi
is it possible to cusomise the reporting home page to add logos, maybe additional text etc?

My understanding is it is not possible.
May be someone from Microsoft can confirm and explain why the hell not...

I would think it is quite natural when implementing RS to give the reports
portal the company look and feel. Are there are other best practices
(besides customizing Home page) to give RS a local company feel. Probably
there are if you choose to develop stuff yourself.
With minimal portal development, what can be done to give users a good
Reporting Home Page.
Some documentation / response from Microsoft would be highly appreciated and
anticipated...

custome code - global?

Is the custom code you write in the Properties section of one report
accessible to other reports within the same project? if so, how is it
accessed?
Thanks,
PMNo it is not. Consider code behind reports. If you want to do this you have
to use custom assemblies. I.e. create the code outside of RS and then
reference it from RS.

custom web app for reportviewer

Hi,

I am trying to develop a custom web page to display and generate our company reports.

It shoud have a login page, and then a general window with 2 or 3 frames (top frame with general info, left frame with a

dynamic list of all existing reports (eventually categorized by a certain word in the report title), and a center frame

that has initialy the company logo and after selecting a specific report displays the parameters and afterwards the

generated report).

Does anybody has some pointers or links on the web where some of this is a little bit documented.

I have dev skills in vb.net and know how to work with ssrs.

My web dev skills are intermediate.

All info, tips, hints are very welcome ...

Greetings

Vinnie

If ou want logic i can provide you that..

code you need to write..

I think you can create login page and list of report..

For the 3rd frame.

keep 3 control there

1 image

2 panel with all the controls thath you need for parameter

3 reportviewer control (property visible = false and size (min that you want)

for 1 - you can initially keep image visible.

on click on list of report make it invicible and make the panel for parameter visible.

2) initially invisible as i said above while keeping it visible check for the parameters for the report that are needed and make thaem visible. everything else invisible.

( In my 10 reports I have kept name of the parameters same for same type like if i need to pull patientname and first visit date ..... so my report parameter is patienName, StartDate in 2 nd report date is i need Patientname with last visitdte

then parameter would be PatientName,last date.

in 3rd report i need patient visited between FirstDate and lastDate.. I would keep same parameter Name..

So for each parameter I hav one control.

So it would be easy to make them visible as per report name.

After that you need to set report to report viewer

than pass parameter values to report

than database login to report( if needed)

than make report viewer visible.

RptViewer.ProcessingMode = Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ProcessingMode.Local;

string ReportPath = "";

break;

}

}

Custom URL to Report Manager

Hopefully someone will know the answer to this one.
We are trying to setup a url (reports.company.com) to point to Report
Manager so that end users will not have to enter in a server name.
This works initially, but the web app changes the url back to
http://ServerName/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx
Is there anyway to have the url not change so that it would show
http://reports.company.com/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx?
We are wanting to customize report manager a bit before we offer to the end
user communnity.
Thanks in advance,
spindlejDuh, I must have been on crack yesterdy. After thinking about it somemore
today, I realized that the default web site in IIS configuration was set to
foward to http://ServerName/Reports/
All I needed to do was change it to forward to
http://reports.company.com/Reports/ and now it works like a charm.
Thanks to me for figuring it out :)

custom summary reports in mgmt studio

Is it possible to create custom summary reports and run them in management studio? I am assuming these reports are RS reports.

thanks,

Derek

Is it possible to create custom summary reports and run them in management studio?

Doubt if there is such feature.

I am assuming these reports are RS reports

SSMS installation doesn't require RS installation, so probably it's wrong assumption.

custom subscription schedule

Is it possible to modify the subscription schedules such that you can avoid
sending reports on non-production days? Holidays, for example? I've got a
few simple subscriptions, each configured to run the reports on 'Every
Weekday'. But, what of the holidays? Is there anyway to account for
holidays, and avoid sending out empty reports?
-- LynnAny thoughts at all? I have a calendar table, I use it like this:
SET DATEFIRST 7
IF DATEPART(WEEKDAY, GETDATE()) BETWEEN 2 AND 6
AND NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM db.dbo.calendar WHERE dt = CONVERT(CHAR(8),
GETDATE(), 112) AND isholiday = 1)
BEGIN
EXEC ......
END
Thus I am able to avoid running certain items on non-production days. As
you know, Reporting Services subscriptions create corresponding SQL Agent
jobs. Can I not preface the tSQL command w/the same thing, like this? :
SET DATEFIRST 7
IF DATEPART(WEEKDAY, GETDATE()) BETWEEN 2 AND 6
AND NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM db.dbo.calendar WHERE dt = CONVERT(CHAR(8),
GETDATE(), 112) AND isholiday = 1)
BEGIN
exec ReportServer.dbo.AddEvent @.EventType='TimedSubscription',
@.EventData='ace5773f-2dec-4d0e-9d89-b73b42f1db00'

My only concern here is that I'm somewhat new to RS, I'm just worried that
modifying the scheduling via SQL Agent may conflict with the RS subscription.
Any ideas, please?

Custom Security Roles

I am trying to implement forms authentication in reporting services and I
would like to use the report manager for rendering reports. What I don't
want to use is the built-in tools for item level and system level security.
Is there a way to get information as to which item is being accessed in the
Getpermissions and CheckAccess function so I can check my custom database for
authorization?Brent,
I don't think you need to know the item accessed because the CheckAccess
overload is scoped at an item level. In other words, if the user tries to
run a report A, the Report Server will pass the security descriptor for
report A only. The job of the security extension is to find out if the user
has rights to carry the action by examing the security descriptor. Any yes,
you can use application-defined role membership policies to simplify the
user maintanance.
I have a two-part article in the works for the SQL Magazine which discusses
Forms Authentication in detail. It should be out in January-February issues
I think.

Hope this helps.

First of all, I want to thank you for your prompt response to my question
and I will be looking for that article when it comes out.
Let me go into further detail as to the situation with the reporting
services and how I would like to use them. I currrently have a proprietary
security system setup for my enterprise-scale application that manages
thousands of users and groups and tens of thousands of roles. I don't want to
have to re-define that information in the ReportSErver database. Actually I
would like it if I had absolutly no security definition at all in the
ReportServer database. That being said. How would I get the unique
identifier of the object (i.e. report,folder,datasource) being accessed so
that I can cross-reference MyDatabase1 for security access.
In a nutshell I want to be able to use the report manager for the report
rendering and not for managing role-based security. I think building our own
custom rendering UI is the only logical alternative.
Please let me know what you would consider the best option with this scenario.
Thank you in advance for your input.

I understand your scenario now. Of course, assuming that the reports will
be rendered on the server side of the application you don't have an issue
since you have an application front end. This is similar to the security
scenario I describe in Chapter 13 of my book.
However, the real problem is with URL addressability and custom security
extension. One approach that may be appropriate in your case is to get the
report path from the URL request. This could be similar to the approach I
describe in the following thread
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=Disable+Hyperlink+in+EXCEL&hl=en&lr=&selm=%23VCcwuh1EHA.1264%40TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl&rnum=1
Once you get the report path, you can get the report identifier (the primary
key in table Catalgo) which is what you may want to use in your custom
security infrastructure.

Custom Security Extension

Hi,

My company has an application in the standard client-server architecture; The client is written in VB 6 and uses reports from the old VB 6 report designer. I am currently undertaking a project which involves transferring these reports to Reporting Services in order to allow access via the internet (a new reporting web front-end is also being designed to work in tandem with the old client). The current client has data restriction features which restrict data and report access depending on a users group - these features can be managed via the client by users with the correct privileges. In order to prevent creation and maintenance of accounts on the both the Report Server and the database for the old client (and to allows non-windows authentication) I have implemented a custom security extension which authenticates users by checking their credentials against the client's database; I also need to authorize users requests against this database however I don't seem to be able to retrieve the identity of the catalogue item that Reporting Services is requesting authorization for.

for example a report is requested; Reporting Services calls the following method:

public bool CheckAccess(string userName, IntPtr userToken, byte[] secDesc, Microsoft.ReportingServices.Interfaces.ReportOperation requiredOperation)

I can't find a way of obtaining the reports name or identity from within this method so I can use it to query the external database to ascertain authorization.

Can anybody help? Am I missing something glaringly obvious?

Your time is very much appreciated.

I have posted exactly the same question. The ACL doesn't tell me anything about what the actual object is that the user is trying to get to. It would be helpful to know that User X is trying to execute Report Y in order to do custom authorization....

Report Server will make many calls to the CheckAccess methods to fill one user request. At some point one of those calls will throw an XML related exception using the GetReportName method. The exception will say "no root node". I don't want to handle this exception by catching it and returning true in the CheckAccess method. So I catch the exception and send back false. Just one false return value will cause the Report Server to send back a failed authorization message to the user if if all of the previous calls to CheckAccess returned true.

Any thoughts on a way to enhance this approach without compromising security?

Custom Reports using Reporting Services

I have a couple of quetsions regarding the Reporting Services. Any response
will be greatly appreciated.
I am looking to see if the user has the capability to design thier own
reports using the reporting services..
Is it possible to provide the report design capability to the user so that
they can build custom reports using SQL Server Reporting Services ?
If yes, how can that be achived? If no, is there any third party tool that
can provide this capability to the user.
Thanks in advance,
--
snbatHi snbat:
Currently an end user needs Visual Studio installed to design reports.
Even the most basic (cheapest) version of the 2003 IDE can be used to
design reports.
There are also a slew of 3rd parties providing solutions, including
report designers (look at Cizer and SoftArtisans):

Currently, you can create your own ad-hoc report generator (it is not that
difficult) or use third-party tools as Scott mentioned.

Custom reports from SQL 2000

What would I need to create custom reports from SQL 2000 reporting services?
I was told I would need Visual Studio to create the reports. It would be
nice to do some ad hoc reporting without having to go to our developer each
time we want to create a new report.RS 2005 has an end user reporting solution as well as the report designer
which exists in RS 2000.

content or type of report.
I would like to create completely custom reports. If VS2003 is the only way
to do it without upgrading to SQL 2005 we may have to go that route.
We have the media for SQL 2005 and isn't there some client side report
writer you could use in conjunction with the SQL 2000 data base we are
currently using for production?

custom report name, not rdl filename

I m trying to deploy reports using rs.exe & rss script. I would like to provide custom Report Name for each report I am deploying (not same as report rdl filename) for more meaningful listing under Report Manager. Is there a way to implement the same?

Thanks

Can you rename the filename to be more meaningful, and use quotations around the filename?

cheers,

Andrew

|||

Hi Andrew, I guess thats the only good option we have for now...

It would have been nice if there were a property for it (ex. ReportName seperate from ReportFilename)

Thanks

|||In Report Manager go to the properies tab of the report...you can change the name. If you create a linked report, you can name the linked reports to anything you want. This is the name that will appear in your reports for ReportFilename|||

jamvir,

I wanted it to named before deployment. I have 100+ of reports being deployed in 3 environments with bi-weekly release cycle. Naming them each time in Report Manager would be a tedious work.

Custom Report Items

Hi,
I want change reports' style after the deployment, so each client can have his style.
Nobody know I can do?

(change the color of table/matrix, insert a image...)Hi,

this can′t be done by a normal predefined report, you have to use the report builder for that. By creating a report model you wil lhave the avaibility to let the user create his own reports from scratch.

Custom Property

Hi,
I am trying to set MS reports custom property from C#. I have tried code specified in the help i.e
Property[] props = new Property[1];
Property setProp = new Property();
setProp.Name = "Description";
setProp.Value = "Sales by quarter and product category.";
props[0] = setProp;
string itemPath = "/SampleReports/Company Sales";
rs.SetProperties(itemPath, props);
But this is working only for "Description" property which is report property. how can I add user defined custom proprty?
Thanks & regards
PrakashYou should be able to add a custom property using the exact same code. Just
change the Name to whatever you want the property to be called. How exactly
is it not working? Is there an error you are seeing returned?
