Custom Security Roles

I am trying to implement forms authentication in reporting services and I
would like to use the report manager for rendering reports. What I don't
want to use is the built-in tools for item level and system level security.
Is there a way to get information as to which item is being accessed in the
Getpermissions and CheckAccess function so I can check my custom database for
authorization?Brent,
I don't think you need to know the item accessed because the CheckAccess
overload is scoped at an item level. In other words, if the user tries to
run a report A, the Report Server will pass the security descriptor for
report A only. The job of the security extension is to find out if the user
has rights to carry the action by examing the security descriptor. Any yes,
you can use application-defined role membership policies to simplify the
user maintanance.
I have a two-part article in the works for the SQL Magazine which discusses
Forms Authentication in detail. It should be out in January-February issues
I think.

Hope this helps.

First of all, I want to thank you for your prompt response to my question
and I will be looking for that article when it comes out.
Let me go into further detail as to the situation with the reporting
services and how I would like to use them. I currrently have a proprietary
security system setup for my enterprise-scale application that manages
thousands of users and groups and tens of thousands of roles. I don't want to
have to re-define that information in the ReportSErver database. Actually I
would like it if I had absolutly no security definition at all in the
ReportServer database. That being said. How would I get the unique
identifier of the object (i.e. report, folder, datasource) being accessed so
that I can cross-reference MyDatabase1 for security access.
In a nutshell I want to be able to use the report manager for the report
rendering and not for managing role-based security. I think building our own
custom rendering UI is the only logical alternative.
Please let me know what you would consider the best option with this scenario.
Thank you in advance for your input.

I understand your scenario now. Of course, assuming that the reports will
be rendered on the server side of the application you don't have an issue
since you have an application front end. This is similar to the security
scenario I describe in Chapter 13 of my book.
However, the real problem is with URL addressability and custom security
extension. One approach that may be appropriate in your case is to get the
report path from the URL request. This could be similar to the approach I
describe in the following thread
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=Disable+Hyperlink+in+EXCEL&hl=en&lr=&selm=%23VCcwuh1EHA.1264%40TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl&rnum=1
Once you get the report path, you can get the report identifier (the primary
key in table Catalgo) which is what you may want to use in your custom
security infrastructure.

spend $20,000 US dollar to buy this product just because of Custom Security
Extensions and Data Driven Subscriptions. I don't think it is worth. How
about SQL server 2005 version ?

presentation on improvements with 2005 but no mention of how things will be
packaged and what the costs would be). You say you don't need enterprise but
then you say you do, because data driven subscriptions and custom security
extensions are two major features of enterprise. There are not that many
things different. About the only other major difference other than those two
is support for web farms. I bet if you price versus Crystal that RS will
still come out ahead or at least even.

Custom Resolver in SQL Server 2005

I'm trying to implement .NET based custom resolver for SQL Server 2005. MS
example shows how to work with publisher / subscriber record data only. To
resolve a conflict I need more info about the business object represented by
record data. I need to run a query / procedure for this purpose. To make a
connection from within my resolver user / password are required. No such
thing is available in 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Replication.BusinessLogicSupp ort'
class.
Note: In SQL Server 2000 VB based COM custom resolver I have
'IReplRowChange' object as an INPUT param for 'IVBCustomResolver_Reconcile'
method which has 'GetSourceConnectionInfo' / 'GetDestinationConnectionInfo'
methods to get to GetLogin / GetPassword and than use ADODB to create a
connection string to run query or sp.
Appreciate any help on this subject.
Is there any workaround to use Custom Resolver COM created for SQL Server
2000 implementing IVBCustomResolver for SQL Server 2005?

custom report item test justification.

Dear all,
i need to extend the functionality of the textbox in reporting services to
implement text justification align.
i made a research and found the concept of "custom report items" but it's
implmented as image i also see the sample of polygonCL in SDK extention
samples
i am asking if there are a way to take all the functionality of textbox and
on just extend the required functionality' or develop a new textbox and
render it as image?
thanksWhat do you mean by text justification?
If you mean you want to center, right align, or left align - those are
already availiable. Just click on the text box and clikc one of the
Justifications.
I dont think this is the problem you are facing. What, exactly, is the
issue? and what is it your tryingto accomplish?|||thanks a lot for your replaying
i mean by text justification is the text width is the same for all line
inside textbox
if you look at word u will see right, left, center and justify align
i need to use a justify align for textbox
by the way i am using RS 2005
thanks

Custom Pagination in Sql Server Reports

Hi there,
Can we implement custom pagination in Sql Server Reports 2005?
Thanks
RaviYes using a formula to break at the given no of lines.
=Int((RowNumber(Nothing)-1)/n) here n is the no of lines in a page.

Custom Editor

Hi,

If I implement a custom editor by inheriting from UITypeEditor, Can I invoke it at RUN TIME from a standard control other than PropertyGrid, say a comboBox or a button ?

If it is possible, could you please let me know how to do it or could you please direct me to some URL which shows how to do it.

Do I have to create a custom control that inherits from control for doing this ?

Thank you.

regards.
S

UITypeEditors are for extending design-time support in the property grid only. So they can be used within the VS studio property grid on tasks and components, or within your custom UI if that uses a property grid. I assume you are asking this in the context of a SSIS component or task and providing improved designer support or a custom UI.

Custom Delivery Extension - SubscriptionID

I am attempting to implement a custom delivery extension for SSRS 2000. The custom delivery extension will deliver the report to a database(table). CreateSubscription WebMethod returns a SubscriptionID once a subscription is created. Is it possible to get this SubscriptionID at run-time i.e when the IDeliveryExtension.Deliver method is called? If so, how? I want to store the SubscriptionID with the report in the database. Thanks for your help.

Custom Data Extension

I know that SRS Enterprise Edition (EE) is needed to implement a custom
security extension. Do I need Enterprise too if I want to implement a
custom data extension?
TIA.You shouldn't as noted here:

Custom Auditing

We are having to implement restrictive security permissions on SQL, some of
which requires that we audit and log any access of any kind for specific
tables and columns. What would be the best way to do this? We can use
triggers to log any changes to specific tables and columns, but we can't use
those when a user is simply retrieving sensitive and encrypted data from a
table. We could lock down access permissions to those tables so that only
authorized users can execute stored procedures, and have code to log such
access in the procs themselves, but we need to ensure that even if the dbo
or sa were to access that data, that it would be logged.
TIA

Database ArchitectMichael,
If you want to log accesses, even of the dbo or sa, then you pretty much
will have to use Profiler. You can put the traces into tables for online
auditing, either directly or by periodically importing the trace files.
There are also probably some third-party auditing tools.
