Customising Report Manager

Hi,

I have implemented Forms authentication for my report manager. (using the custom Security sample solution) ie i have added a login page, which upon autentication redirects to report manager.

Now i want to add a "sign out" link in the report manager so that when the user clicks on that, it gets redirects to the login page.

Is it possible, if so can anyone let me know where i can implement the code for the same

Thanks,

Bharath V V

Report manager wasn't exactly meant to be customized. How did you create your login page? Using Visual Studio 2005?

|||

There really is not a lot of customizing that you can do with report manager.

In the past few times I have needed to customize, I just created an entire application to replace report manager.

Then used a combination of the web services and/or report viewer control.

BobP

|||Yes.. using VS 2005, and the CustomSecurity.Sln given in the reporting services samples.|||

Oh thats bad news for me

anyways thanks BobP

Custom security extension permission problem

I've created a Reporting Service security extension based on the sample. It works great on my development 2003 servers but when moved into integration environment I am getting the following error in Report Manager when clicking a report:

Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.ReportingServices.ProcessingObjectModel, Version=9.0.242.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. Access is denied.

Navigating folders and creating folders all seems to work in Report Manager. We only get this error when selecting a report. If I uninstall the custom security extension then everything works.

This seems like a difference in security settings between the two server but I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it.

Thanks

William

I had a similar problem and it was due to the fact that the user account of the SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) service did not have access to the C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files directory. It needs Modify access. Once I changed that, it worked fine.

Good luck

|||

Thanks.

I had to add modify permissions on C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files to the Execution Account I specified in Reporting Services Configuration Manager. This is because I ran a report with a local datasource (with dynamic connectionstring) with setting "Credentials are not required".

custom security extension

Hello,
i tried the sample for the custom security extension for sql server 2005.
the c# Version worked, the vb.net version does not!
Is there another example with the use of application roles? We need this for
reporting issues.
thx in advange
michaelHi michael,
Welcome to use MSDN Managed Newsgroup Support.
I am not so sure which sample application you can not deploy. Would you
please post the Application path here?
As for the samples of Application Role, you may try to refer SQL Server
books online.
An application role is a database principal that enables an application to
run with its own, user-like privileges.
The following steps make up the process by which an application role
switches security contexts:
A user executes a client application.
The client application connects to an instance of SQL Server as the
user.
The application then executes the sp_setapprole stored procedure with
a password known only to the application.
If the application role name and password are valid, the application
role is activated.
At this point the connection loses the permissions of the user and
assumes the permissions of the application role.
For more detail information, you may refer the following article:
Application Roles
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190998(SQL.90).aspx
CREATE APPLICATION ROLE
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181491(SQL.90).aspx
Hope this will be helpful.

I tried this sample application:
c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Samples\Reporting
Services\Extension Samples\FormsAuthentication Sample\cs\FormsAuthentication
It worked for me, but i need the ability to work also with Roles (instead of
NT Group names).
Is there a sample application which consider application roles to group
users with identical permissions for a Custom security extension for sql
server 2005?
thx

I understand that you want to use application roles for a custom security
extension for SQL reporting services. If I misundestood your concern,
please feel free to point it out.
Application Role is a database principal that enables an application to run
with its own, user-like privileges. So Application Role is a database
security. And I think it is not suitable for the Reporting Service.
If you use application role to control the permission of SQL database then
you can not control the authentication of the Reports in the report server.
Thank your for your understanding.

Custom Rendering

hi all,
I want to "create" a renderer for RS (2000). I read some articles on
this topic, and i found this technical sample for RS 2005 :
Display Your Data Your Way with Custom Renderers for Reporting Services
:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/05/02/CustomRenderers/default.aspx
I've read int this newsgroup the way to implement the rendreing is the
same in RS 2000.
I can compile my customized renderer, but when i look at my reports, i
don't see my renderer in the ouputs dropdownlist... I have modified the
"RSReportServer.config" and "rssrvpolicy.config" files, as its written
in the article. I tried IISRESET, and I even restart the server, but no
changes.
Does this sample really work in RS 2000 ?
If yes, do you have any suggestion to resolve my problem ?I'm back to give more information about my problem.
Here's what i found in the report server log file (sorrry, some words
are French) :
w3wp!extensionfactory!ca0!06/07/2005-15:52:05:: e ERROR: Exception

.
It seems that my assembly mscorlib can't be called, or that mscorlib
can't access something.
I don't understand really this error. Can somebody help me ?
Thanks.

Custom connection manager development sample?

Does anyone has code/sample/tutorial/pointer to developing custom connection manager with a custom UI. And then developing a custom task with a custom UI that can point to this custom connection manager... and passing values during runtime from UI to the custom class.

TIA,
NiteshThe first updated Web release of BOL will contain one sample that works with SQL Server and simply asks for server name...a kind of "Hello World" version of what you're asking for.

The second Web release next spring will contain a second sample, a replacement Excel connection manager that includes a checkbox for Import Mode to resolve the common "mixed data types" issue.

The code is too long to post in the forum, but if you'll provide an email address, I can send you one or both.

It's pleasantly simple, relatively speaking, the the UI methods are almost identical from task to data flow component to connection manager, so what you learn will also be portable.

I assume you mean a custom UI for the component not connection. You follow a similar pattern to tasks, but inherit from IDtsComponentUI Interface.

Custom Code

I have been reading a little about custom code - Where do I type this code at in the report? Does anyone have a sample report or info they could pass along? Sorry about the dumb question , but i am a newbie and I am not so bright...you click on Report - Properties and click on Code tab. there you can write your vb.net functions..
sample CC :

Public Shared Function RetCardHolderName(lastname as string, middle as string, firstname as string) as String
If ( firstname is system.dbnull.value OR len(trim(firstname))=0 ) Then
return ( trim(lastname))
else
if ( middle is system.dbnull.value OR len(trim(middle))=0 ) Then
return (trim(firstname) & " " & trim(lastname))
else
return (trim(firstname) & " " & trim(middle) & " " & trim(lastname) )
end if
end if
End Function

I wrote this CC to return the first, middle and last names concatenated as one string.

from the report I pass the parameters as :
in the Expression window for the field :

=Code.RetCardHolderName(Fields!LAST_NAME.Value, Fields!MID_NAME.Value, Fields!FIRST_NAME.Value)

Custom authorization with forms authentication

We are currently implementing forms authentication in our RS deployment. The
MSDN sample helped get us started. We are now faced with the authorization
implementation.
How do I go about telling RS which user has access to which folder/report?
Telling RS which users will be administrators? Do I still get to use
role-based security and can create/edit my roles through the Report Manager
or do I need to assign indepentent permissions per user?Ray,
Yes, you would establish role-based security policies just like you would do
with Windows-based security. Your authorization extension will have the
final say if the user is authorized to perform a given action. For example,
if you need to implement role membership rules, you can change the
CheckAccess overloads to account for the addtional rights that the user will
get based on her role membership. Debugging the CheckAccess overloads should
help you clarify how this could be done.

Hope this helps.

Let me clarify. The default implementation of a custom authentication
extension as demonstrated in the MS sample relies on the role-based policies
the report administrator has established for a report item. This is very
much the same as the Windows-based role-based security the comes by default
with RS. So, for example if you have a web customer with an id of johndoe
and you want him to view a given report by URL, you can grant him Browser
permissions to that report using the Report Manager. This is pretty much all
you have to do to get John Doe set up for Forms Authentication assuming that
you "inherit" the MS sample code.
At the same time, the Forms Authentication model of RS is very flexible. For
example, it is typically impractical to create role-based security policies
for individual users, especially for Internet-facing applications. Then,
what you can do is to implement additional logic in your CheckAccess
overloads to take in consideration the application role membership your
users have.
The beauty of this model is that the authentication and authorization
implementation is totally outside the Report Server and responsibility of
your extension.
Does this all make sense now?

Hope this helps.

>|||Hi Teo,
I am having a problem similar to RayG's, using the forms authentication
sample code. I put some debug statements into the
Microsoft.Samples.ReportingServices.CustomSecurity.Authorization class,
CheckAccess methods. I also commented out the logic in the
AuthenticationExtension and AuthenticationUtilities classes such that all
logon attempts are permitted without password checking (return true).
I found that when accessing report resources using an identity that is
defined in MSRS, that the Authorization.CheckAccess methods are invoked. I
set up security on the Home folder and one subfolder, and was able to use
combinations of groups to restrict access appropriately. I also found that
when you use a logon credential that is not defined in MSRS (that is, not
used in any object's ACL), that the Authorization.CheckAccess methods are not
invoked. For example, I set up a "Users" group, and granted it access to a
folder. Logging on as "Users" I could access this folder. Logging on as
"User" gave me an access denied message, as expected, however, none of the
Authorization.CheckAccess methods were invoked either...unexpected.
This presents a problem, as I am trying to set up groups in MSRS that map to
user groups in my application. It seems that because the
Authorization.CheckAccess methods are not invoked in this case, there is no
opportunity to extend them with custom authorization code which would take
advantage of a user's GenericPrincipal role affiliations (using a
GenericPrincipal object I attached to the HttpContext earlier) to facilitate
group-to-group mapping for confirming or denying access to a resource.
I don't know if this is a bug in MSRS, or if I have simply misconfigured
something. Any ideas? Thanks.

How did you test that CheckAccess overloads are not invoked? Please note
that they will be invoked only during runtime. If you use the Report Manager
they are not invoked. Instead, GetPermissions will be called. Therefore, you
need to duplicate the same permission checks in GetPermissions as you would
in CheckAccess. I suggest you refactor the common logic from CheckAccess
overloads in a helper function so can be easily reused.
So, just like with Windows authentication, your security authentication
extensions will authenticate the user based on the user identity. In other
words, if I am Bob and I belong to role Sales Reps, I will log in as Bob. In
my authorization extension I will authorize the user based on the user
identity and role membership. Once again, you need to do this in both
CheckAccess and GetPermissions, the later being used by the Report Manager
as a result to a call to the GetPermissions SOAP API.

Thanks for turning me on to the GetPermissions method...adding a role check
there did the trick. To check the invocation of the CheckAccess overloads, I
just wrote some debug statements to a log file. Thanks again for your help.
