Custom unique ID.

Hello all,
I baddly need to create my own datatype, that will be able to generate
itself as unique id.
1. my user defined data type is based on char(14).
2. structure of this type is
YYYYMMDDSCIDCONT
YYYY = year of record creation
MM = month of record creation
DD = day of record creation
SCID = value of SCID column in the table
CONT = counter (like identity seed) next unique value in the table
I can to do it by my .NET application, or i can make unique keys with all
values in the table, but I would like to create my own SQL type, that will
be able to do what i described. Is it possible?
Thanks.Maybe I should better explain this or ask for some questions.
My task Im going to do:
1) create my own User Defined Data Type based on char(16) named for example
MyIDType
2) create rule that will check if the value is in right format.
3) create function, that will able to generate new id with parameters
datetime, scid. This fuction will parse the datetime, scid and newly created
counter into char(16) and into MyIDType.
Questions:
1) can I create rule that contain more complex check than one rule row ?
2) How to ask for source table in T-SQL function. I mean for the table which
initiated running of my function. Im going to put this function onto
defaultValue of the column that will be type of MyIDType. The function will
suppose, that in this table will exist columns CreationDateTime and SCID.
I know, how to do it in C#. The workflow of this function should be (it is
an example, dont check any syntax):
FUNCTION GetNewMyID (@.scid char(4))
DECLARE @.datetimenow char(8)
DECLARE @.lastid char(4)
DECLARE @.partOfMyID char(12)
@.datetimenow = FORMAT( GETDATE()) // in format YYYYMMDD
for(int i = 1; i < 10000; i++)
{
@.partOfMyID = @.datetimenow + @.scid + i.ToString("0000")
SELECT MyID FROM [executingTable?] WHERE MyID LIKE @.partOfMyID
if(there is no row)
return @.partOfMyID;
}
I hope, the good programer will understand this weird construction. :)))
Thanks.

Sure.
I understand that function but what does 'scid' mean? Let me know.

As for the SQL 2005 clr UDT, it is still quiet limited, e.g, if the data
type used in the UDT is not in the following basic types:
bool, byte, sbyte, short, ushort, int, uint, long, ulong, float, double,
SqlByte, SqlInt16, SqlInt32, SqlInt64, SqlDateTime, SqlSingle, SqlDouble,
SqlMoney, SqlBoolean
we have to implenent our userdefined serialization. For type validation, we
can define the validation rules in a certain method and mark it with the
"ValidationMethodName" attribute.
And for the constructing a new UDT instance based on some parameters or
other info in the current database, this is hard to be done through the UDT
itself since UDT just provide a "parse" function which help use create UDT
instance from a string representation(also a "ToString" method help return
string representation from a UDT instance). For your scenario, maybe we
have to define an additional user defined funciton(CLR based) to the work.

This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.|||You can create static method(s) in your UDT to create. Kinda like a static
constructor. Something like:
public static MyID Create(SqlDateTime dt, SqlInt id, SqlInt counter)
{
// ...
return new MyID(dt, id, counter);
}
Use the sql types that make sense for your needs.
Then you can create an instance something like:
declare @.id MyID
set @.id = MyID.Create(getdate(), 1, 1)

Custom Task Properties

So I've built my own custom task and it has a selection of properties.
I drop it onto designer and can see the properties (VS Property Grid not custom UI ).

The properties window retracts and I decide to reopen the property window. My Properties have now disappeared (mine - not inherted). Never do they return for that instance of the task. add another task and we can see the second instance's properties but suffer the same fate as with #1 when we want to see them on > 1 occasion.

I can see the properties in Expressions which leads me to think the task is correct and it is a VS grid thing.

Jamie, Myself and Darren have experienced differing but similar issues with properties of various objects (variables/Tasks) and being able to see the values etc.

Is this an issue you are aware of internally?

Thanks

Allan

We've seen similar issues in the past. Since it's not happening with the stock tasks (or is it?) I would question if it's the grid...
Hard to say without having the task or some other repro of the problem.
Do you see this with other tasks besides your custom tasks?

Using Custom Style Sheet in SQL Reporting Services 2000

Changing the style-sheet in SQL Reporting Services is one question that I have seen commonly asked in the forums. Well yes the answer is straight forward but at times some straight answers don’t work :) .

Following is my finding on how to use your own style sheet in Reporting Services:

Prerequisite : SP2 hot fix: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;901383

Following are the steps for using custom style sheet in Reporting Services:

1. Add <HTMLViewerStyleSheet> element in RSReportServer.config within the <configuration> element.
2. DON’T include the ".css" extension in the name of the style sheet.
3. Example: <HTMLViewerStyleSheet>htmlviewer2</HTMLViewerStyleSheet>

Following is going to fail:
<HTMLViewerStyleSheet>htmlviewer2.css</HTMLViewerStyleSheet>

Following works:
<HTMLViewerStyleSheet>htmlviewer2</HTMLViewerStyleSheet>

Make sure that the style sheet is located in the styles directory of Reporting Services (i.e. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting Services\ReportServer\Styles).

The default style sheet used by the HTML Viewer uses the font Verdana for displaying labels and dropdown values. Unfortunately, Verdana does not have full Unicode support.
SP2 (with the hot fix at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;901383) allows you to change the stylesheet that is used by the viewer.

If you want to hide items on the Reporting Services Toolbar, you can do this by customizing each button/item individually by changing the stylesheet. Basically, you just need to change the style display:inline to display:none for the items which you don't want to show/hide on the toolbar.

Hope this should help some of you in using a custom style sheet in Reporting Services.

Custom Semi-Transparent bar charts?

I know that SSRS 2005 has a built-in semi-transparent color chart palette, but I'd like to define my own custom color semi-transparent palette.

Brian Welker's blog (https://blogs.msdn.com/bwelcker/archive/2005/05/20/420349.aspx) has a terrific post on how to create your own custom color palette, but it generates solid colors. How can it be tweaked to create semi-transparent colors? Is there another function that needs to be created to define the transparency of the color palette?

Thanks in advance,

Pete

Sorry, semi-transparency cannot be achieved by defining your own custom color palette.

There are CustomReportItem-based chart add ins available for RS from third parties (such as Dundas and ChartFX) which will enable that kind of functionality in RS 2005.

-- Robert

|||

Bummer.

Can images be used in charts? (I doubt it, but thought I'd inquire.)

Thanks,
Pete

|||

Yes, you can use an image as a background image for the chart plotarea (select the chart and look for the BackgroundImage property in the VS properties window).

-- Robert

|||

I should have made my followup question clearer. I meant to ask if images can be used in the actual charting of values, for example to use an image of coins for bar charts whereby the bars on the chart are actually a "stack" of the coins. Or to use an image that gets "stretched" on the bars of a bargraph.

--Pete

|||

I believe the plug-in from Dundas ("Dundas Charts for Reporting Services") supports this, but you would need to check with them. It is not supported out of the box with the built-in charts.

Transparency is more than possible with ANY system palette or custom palette.
The trick (work-around whatever) lies in modifying the 'alpha' component of the colour for each series in the chart AFTER they have had their colour assigned to them.

ie. i used the code

//set the transparency of the series
if(_abstractChart.Options.Transparency > 0) {
//get the transparency as a percentage
double transPerc = _abstractChart.Options.Transparency / 100.00;
//Alpha value 255 is opaque, 0 is transparent. set the transparency as a % of 255
int alphaValue = (int) (255 * (1-transPerc));
_chart.ApplyPaletteColors();
foreach(Series series in _chart.Series) {
series.Color = Color.FromArgb(alphaValue, series.Color.R, series.Color.G, series.Color.B);
}
}

where
-abstractChart.Options.Transparency is the integer value (between 0 and 100 inclusive) denoting the transparent %.
-_chart is a Dundas.Charting.WebControl.Chart

in my C# application, a percentage value is retrieved from the user from an aspx form. I subtract the tranparent component of the alpha value from the max (255) to get the Opacity, which is what i set in the colour. Giving the user 101 grades of tranparency (no pun intended).

HOWEVER, i actually have a problem. Though this method works fine for bar chart, radar, area line charts, it DOES NOT work for pie charts. The semi-transparent palette works for pie charts, but this method does not.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge of the dundas system could use my solution in the right place to achieve transparency for pie charts?

please?

I thought maybe using this method in Customize, PrePaint or PostPaint event would work. Havent had the chance to try it yet.
Cheers

|||

Okay, i figured it out.
A bar chart has one series object in the Dundas.Charting.WebControl.Chart.Series[] of the chart for every bar, so setting the colour of the series would apply to the bar which that series plots.
A pie chart has one series object for the whole chart, and the slices are individual datapoints within that series.
The solution quite simply is to add another level to the loop which iterates through every datapoint of the current series.
If processing time is a concern there should be a check present for whether the second loop is necessary (so far i have only found it necessary within PIE charts)
if(abstractChart.Options.Transparency > 0) {
//get the transparency as a percentage
double transPerc = abstractChart.Options.Transparency / 100.00;
//Alpha value 255 is opaque, 0 is transparent. set the transparency as a % of 255
int alphaValue = (int) (255 * (1-transPerc));
chart.ApplyPaletteColors();
foreach(Series series in chart.Series) {
if(abstractChart.GetChartType != ChartType.Pie) {
series.Color = Color.FromArgb(alphaValue, series.Color.R, series.Color.G, series.Color.B);
}
else{
foreach(DataPoint dp in series.Points) {
dp.Color = Color.FromArgb(alphaValue, dp.Color.R, dp.Color.G, dp.Color.B);
}
}
}
}
Where
-abstractChart.Options.Transparency is the integer value (between 0 and 100 inclusive) denoting the transparent %.
-_chart is a Dundas.Charting.WebControl.Chart
-abstractChart.ChartType is an identifier for the type of chart we are plotting (Abstract Chart is one of MY classes, as is ChartType)

By the way, this code is called after the chart object has been created, but before returning from the method which created the chart object.
IE.
public Dundas.Charting.WebControl.Chart MakeChart(){
Dundas.Charting.WebControl.Chart chart = new Dundas.Charting.WebControl.Chart();
..
..
..
..
<transparency code>
..
..
..
return chart;
}
any questions?

Hi everyone,

I just inquiring if the 'My subscription' toolbar at the upper right portion of the report manager can be removed? or shall we say hide... If possible, how to remove please help...

Another question is when you click the show details button, the option to delete and move appears but it is initially disabled...is there a way also to hide the move button?

thank you very much...hope to have any response or advice as soon as possible...thanks

Hello Thor:

Interesting... I'm a little confused, though. Is your code affecting the Dundas charting component or are you suggesting a way to create charting transparency in reporting services without the need for a third party add-in like Dundas (or ChartFX)?

Thanks,

Pete

|||

hey pete

yeh, not sure what you mean, theres alot of syllables in some of those words.
To try to answer your question; i'm using dundas, and the code i supplied directly changes the colour value for datapoint objects/series objects inside a DUNDAS chart. IE i assign a new colour for each datapoint/series in the code, in this case the new colour is the same as the old one (which is assigned from the palette) except the alpha value has been changed.
effectively, any palette can therefore have transparency applied to it, retaining the oiginal colours of the palette.
SO... i think the answer to your question is that this code NEEDS dundas and i affect the instance of the dundas charting component to create transparency.
but technically this should work for any charting tool that allows you to modify the colour of the datapoints in a series after they have been assigned a colour and before they are drawn.
ps. last time i ran my app. it changed the colour for the whole pie chart to the colour of the first datapoint. i think this code would have to be in the PrePaint event (its worked there before).
ill post again when i know for sure.

...Edit...
just read the top post again, and realised you're not using dundas. for some reason i thought this was all about dundas.
anyways, this should work for that charting thing you use IF you can change the colours of the series / datapoints at the right time. Might take some experimenting to figure out where, or even if you can do it.

Custom Security: How do you manage groups

Dear Anyone,

We are trying to create our own custom security extension for rs2005. We are wondering how will then security extension will manage the authenticated users and how will it be mapped to an existing RS2005 group or role?

Thanks,

Joseph

It completely depends on how you write the extension itself.

I'd recommend that you use the forms auth extension as a start: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Samples\Reporting Services\Extension Samples\FormsAuthentication Sample

Change the parts of it that handle authentication, and then leave the parts alone which do authorization for you.

If you go this route, you will continue to use all the same roles you did before: Browser, Content Manager, etc.

|||

How would this dovetail with using Custom roles within the custom authentication database?

I've already implemented a version of the custom authentication extension and have the basic SSRS Forms auth working.

For example, users of my application log in with a companycode and would be put into one or many custom application roles that would ostensibly control the visibility of various folders and reports (you can imagine the various scenarios). Would I have to intercept the ASP.NET authentication pipeline and insert a custom Principal/Identity into the HTTP context? Would SSRS use the "User.IsInRole" construct to determine if the user is in a role that can "see" the restricted SSRS objects?

Just in case I confused anyone...I want to be able to add application-domain roles to the SSRS built-in (and possibly custom) roles and use those to restrict visibility to the SSRS objects.

Thanks,

Matthew Belk

|||Did you ever find an answer to this question? We're wanting to do the same thing (use roles from our custom application DB).|||

You can do this by assigning security within RS using the role names (just like windows groups). To get this to work though you will need to:

1. make your implementation of IAuthenticationExtension.IsValidPrincipalName check against the roles in your custom database
2. Implement IAuthorisationExtension.CheckAccess and in there look up the roles the user belongs to and check the access based on the username and his roles.

A good sample of this is located at:

http://www.devx.com/dotnet/Article/26759 - Part 1
http://www.devx.com/dotnet/Article/27133 - Part 2

Custom Row Level Security

Hi,
We have developed a 3-tier application and have developed our own method of
handling row level data security. Basically our application passes all
ad-hoc SQL queries through an object that replaces table names with view
names. Each user is assigned a role which has a view defined for it. For
example, issuing the statement:
SELECT FIRSTNAME FROM PEOPLE
would send the follow statement to the database:
SELECT FIRSTNAME FROM OC_LINEMANAGER_PEOPLE_READ
Where OC_LINEMANAGER_PEOPLE_READ is the name of a view in our SQL Server
database.
Obviously we want to apply the same security to users when accessing our
database using Report Services. The only way I can see of doing this is
that we parse SQL statements issued from Reporting Services and modify them
to use our view names.
Can we write a Data Processing Extension to do this? Would this apply to
the results returned in the visual query designer in the embedded report
writer in VS.NET?
Thanks
PeterI should probably hesitate to answer this, because I am not certain, but I
beleive that you can do what you wish with an extension. I suspect that it
would also apply to the generic designer, but I do not know how the DaVinci
toolkit designer would respond... Perhaps someone else will jump in .
Something which others have done is, instead of having a view for each user,
which might not scale well and is probably a management problem... Create a
mapping table with the user name and the keys the user can see, then join
the mapping table back to the orig table... this is essentially putting your
where clauses from all of your views into a table... Then the suser_sname()
or user! values can be used in the query...

Thanks for the reply. We are creating views for roles rather than users, so
if we have say 10,000 users there may only be 20 roles.
If you use a mapping table you would still need to use a view in order to
package the table to the user (the view would join the two tables).
I think the best thing we can do is to experiment with the DPE and see what
we come up with.
What is the DaVinci toolkit designer?
Thanks,
Peter|||You could still do the join to a table of 10,000 rows that has user names
and groups, and filter on user name. That's a relatively inexpensive join.
Another possibility is to use a custom assembly, and make all of your SQL
dynamic rather than static. For example:
=code.Parse("SELECT FIRSTNAME FROM PEOPLE")
rather than just the SQL text in the value.

Custom Query Designer

Hi,
I'm having some trouble with implementing my own Query Designer.
I have built a control that implements the IQueryDesigner Interface
and register it in the RSReportDesigner.config file.
However Visual Studio never calls it. When I click on the Generic Query
Designer Button to switch between the Generic Designer an my Custom Designer,
The Designer window simply Reads
"The Query could not be loaded."
"Verify your connection string and query string."
I have tried attaching the debugger and I can break on the other Data
Extension classes I have implemented. So it appears that Studio is erring
before it gets to loading my Control. Everything else works fine if I run it
through the generic query designer.
I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Reporting Services thinking
the Designer may be broken, but this hasn't helped.
Unless someone has a better Idea, I'm going to resort to reinstalling visual
studio.
Any Ideas?
Thanks
Adrian B.Testing the Query Designer Code on another machine has not helped. So
re-installing Visual Studio will pointless.
I am currently at a loss for where to go with this.
Does anyone have any ideas at all?
Adrian B.

Custom palette in pie chart

Hi there!
I'v been trying to figure this out for a while, I have a Pie chart for
which I want to set the colors of the pies to my own defined colors.
The source dataset may contain 0 to 15 values, I've tried the folowing
solutions but none seem to work.
When column bouncetype is "HARD_BOUNCE" the pie should be green, etc...
=Switch
(
First(Fields!BounceType.Value,
"MailMessageBounceByType")="HARD_BOUNCE","GREEN",
First(Fields!BounceType.Value, "MailMessageBounceByType")="UNKNOWN","BLUE",
First(Fields!BounceType.Value,
"MailMessageBounceByType")="SPAM_NOTIFICATION","RED"
)
And also an iif statement.
=Iif(First(Fields!BounceType.Value,
"MailMessageBounceByType")="HARD_BOUNCE","GREEN",
Iif(First(Fields!BounceType.Value, "MailMessageBounceByType")="UNKNOWN",
"Red","Blue"))
Any ideas?If I have understoood correctly what you need is to set up colors in your
pie chart setting a color per group.
So, right click on the chart > Properties > Data Tab > Edit your value >
Appeareance tab > Series style > fill > Color > and the put the expression:
= iif(Fields!BounceType.Value, "HARD_BOUNCE","GREEN",
iif(Fields!BounceType.Value, "Red","Blue"))

Well, that's exactly what I did. ;)
I solved it though, by putting code in the Code-Tab, it's a smoother
solution I think.

Custom Order By

Hi,

I want to ask something. Is there any possibility to use order by using our own criteria. Example: I want to order my query by ProductName with specified criteria. See below

Products:

ProductID ProductName

1 Book

2 Pen

3 Ruler

The query for "select * from Products order by ProductName" will actually result

1 Book

2 Pen

3 Ruler

I want the result be like this:

2 Pen

1 Book

3 Ruler

May be my crazy idea is using this kind of query:

"select * from Products order by ProductName ( 'Pen' , 'Book' , 'Ruler' )"

Thanks in advance .....

If you have a limited number of 'sort by' items, you could use a CASE structure.

SELECT
Col1,
Col2,
Col3,
etc
FROM MyTable
ORDER BY CASE Col2
WHEN 'Pen' THEN 1
WHEN 'Book' THEN 2
WHEN 'Ruler' THEN 3
END

it works, great !!! ...

thanks ....

Custom Front-End Using Multi-Value Parameters on Reports

Hello,
We have developed our own ASP.NET 2.0 (C#) front-end for Reporting Services (SQL Server 2005). The front-end is kind of "generic" in the sense that it looks at all the parameters for any report selected by the end-user and creates a display for the end-user to configure the parameter values. This all works fine, except for one report that has a multi-value parameter.

On the report viewer through Report Manager, this multi-value parameter displays as a drop down list in which you can select one or more parameters by checking the appropriate checkboxes by the values.

So, we need some way to emulate this. Is there a built-in ASP.NET server control that will handle such a situation? If so, what?

Or, what else can we do to handle a multi-value parameter in our custom app.?

Thanks.

Have a look here for a nice DropDownCheckList ASP.NET Server Control

Where is the same dropdownlist control with checkboxes that we can use on our client reports (rdlc)?|||

Iam also getting the same problem with the multi-value report parameters. if u get any solution on this issue pls send me also.

Custom Data Processing Extension

HI everyone,
i want to develop my own data processing extension.
But i'm struggeling with the following issue:
I want to enable a user to select my custom datasource, then make a
connection to central server, that hosts abstract "Business Objects".
After that the user should be able to use the report wizard in VS.NET to
retrieve a list of all Business Objects that are hosted on that central
server and select a specific output table of a method of a business object.
But how can i embed my own UI to support such a scenario?
Thanks in advance,
MarkusYou can specify the designer associated with your custom data-extension
via the following config file:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Report
Designer\RSReportDesigner.config
You would need to modify the associated designer within the <Designer>
group. The default designer for SQL Server is:
Microsoft.ReportDesigner.Design.VDTQueryDesigner
To create a custom designer, you would need to derrive from:
Microsoft.ReportDesigner.Design.InternalQueryDesigner
...and implement your own custom controls for the designer.
However, after having said all this, I really havent had a need to
implement a custom designer so far. In most cases, I just set the
designer to: Microsoft.ReportDesigner.Design.GenericQueryDesigner
Then, I just intercept the CommandText and do whatever I need to with
my data extension. I have had success doing this with Xml and other
text as the CommandText instead of SQL. Obviously, this won't provide
the users with your list of all Business Objects available, but it
works.
Good luck.
Lance Hunt
http://www.lance-hunt.net/|||One other alternative is to have the business-object selection be a
per-datasource configuration instead of something driven thru the query
designers.
This approach would entail extending the connection-string editor
dialog and may be a bit simpler. (just guessing)|||Hi Lance,
thanks for your great first answer! I'm in the middle of building my own UI
for selecting business entites but am facing a very strange problem...:
I inherited "Microsoft.ReportDesigner.Design.InternalQueryDesigner" and
there is one member "DesignerQueryString" that is marked as internal and
abstract.
But i'm not able to override this member in my class... i tried everything,
it's really strange :-)
Any guess?
Greetings
Markus|||Sorry, I didnt notice that field was internal-abstract. Thats pretty
silly since MS marked the class as public abstract! :(
I guess your only choice is to create your designer based upon
Microsoft.ReportDesigner.Interfaces.IQueryDesigner instead of
InternalQueryDesigner. This just means that you will have to do a bit
more plumbing. Its a shame because InternalQueryDesigner would have
worked if it werent for that one field.
Good luck...|||it's working!!! :-)))))
One (hopefully) last question:
Why doesn't the QueryBuilder show up in the Repord Wizard Form? The "Edit"
Button is disabled. But if i select anoter data source (e.g. SQL) this button
is enabled.

If you are basically saying your designer isnt wired-up (not visible):
Did you add your extension to the config file at:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Report
Designer\RSReportDesigner.conf=ADig '
You should end up adding multiple nodes to this file:
The first is the \Configuration\Extensions\Data\Extension XML
Element, and the second is
the \Configuration\Extensions\\Data\Designer element. Make sure
the "name" attribute
matches in both nodes.
Please clarify...
Lance|||Sorry, I misread your post. You are referring to the "Report Wizard"
not the DataSet tab.
I'll take a look at this and see if I can figure it out...|||yes, i already added all the nodes to the .config file.
But the edit button is disabled. I mean the button on the very last dialog
at "Reports->Add New Report" right to the "Query String" TextBox.

reason why they included that restriction. Had they simply followed
the same model used in the designer-integration it should have worked.

Custom Conflict Viewer

Hi -I would like to create my own conflict viewer for a few reasons:
1. I am using MSDE
2. I would like to have more control over what is shown to the user
3. The application may store attachments in image fields (say they are
Excel spreadsheets), the user would like to view the content of the winning
and losing image fields (and see the spreadsheets) before they make a
decision on which would they want to keep.
Does anyone know what is the best way to go about it?
To get information on conflicts, it seems that I need to use the
following sprocs:
sp_helpmergearticleconflicts
sp_helpmergeconflictrows
sp_helpmergedeleteconflictrows
After I have this information, it seems that I need to get the table at
the publisher (I am using the default conflict resolver so the publisher
always win when I run the Merge agent) and its equivalent conflict table and
display them to the user (after some formatting). Am I on the right track?
Are there stored procedures or views to get the conflict table or do I just
reference it directly? Are there stored procedures to manipulate the
conflict table (so the conflict can be deleted after resolution).
Are there any libraries or controls out there that would accomplish
something similar?
Thank you,
Maer

this.

ones that come with SQL Server are sufficient for us. What I want is to
create a Conflict Viewer so that after merging has taken place and winners

override the decision if necessary).

Custom Code in SSAS

Hi,

in AS2000 you could register an own dll to add functionality in MDX for calculations. What is the equivalent in AS2005?

Thanks...

The same except now it is a .NET assembly.

Mosha has some interesting examples on his web site and in his blog.

Custom Charts...

Does reporting services currently allow me to write my own particular chart
that will appear inline int he report as the stock reports do?
reports and reports, but I would like to have some specific views that arent
in the chart selection.
Thanks in advance
Weston WeemsThere are several options:
* RS 2000:
You could draw your chart in a custom assembly and retrieve the value via
the Image.Value expression. Note: the custom assembly would be responsible
to retrieve all the data needed to draw the chart.
If you search the archives of this newsgroup you should find some related
postings from me and other people about how to do this.
* RS 2005:
In addition to what you can do on RS 2000, you could take advantage of the
new CustomReportItem feature and write your own custom processing control.
In this case, you could leverage the capabilities of the RS processing
engine to retrieve, group, sort, filter the data for you and the custom
processing control can read the already processed data through an object
model and then draw the chart image and return it as Image "rendering item".
More information and samples about this will be available when SQL Server
2005 is going to be released.

Hey can I write my own charting component for Reporting Services? Where
could I find information on that?
Thanks,
CJHello CJ,
Generally the answer you'll get to that question is "no" you cannot create
your own charting component for Reporting Services.
What you can't do easily is create a new custom component that you can host
in a Report and in the Report Designer.
However if you are prepared to make some compromises you most certainly can
create a custom component that takes your data and generates an image stream
that is displayed in a Reporting Services Image control.
This is usually best done by creating a custom data processing extension,
and ensuring that one field is an image stream of the data, but if you think
carfully about how to get all the data your component requires parsed into a
DataSet field then you can do this entirely in a function within a custom
assembly. What you do there is pass in the DataSet field containing your
parsed data, and have the Function work with this data and return an image
stream.
ok - so that is indeed only going to return a static image of your
component, but depending on what you are trying to do, you may be able to
programmatically set the Jump to URL Action property of the image control
containing the image of your component to jump to a URL in which you might
have a more fully functional and interactive version of the component.
I think future versions of Reporting Services would be missing a trick if
they don't provide a straightforward mechanism for hosting custom components
within reports, although there are doubtless architechural issues that the
developers will have to work out.
