Customize SRS Home Page

I need to customize the SQL Reporting services home page with my company logo and some text. Is there a way of doing this. Thanks!SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services 2000 SP1 added the capability make some

Customising Report Manager

Hi,

I have implemented Forms authentication for my report manager. (using the custom Security sample solution) ie i have added a login page, which upon autentication redirects to report manager.

Now i want to add a "sign out" link in the report manager so that when the user clicks on that, it gets redirects to the login page.

Is it possible, if so can anyone let me know where i can implement the code for the same

Report manager wasn't exactly meant to be customized. How did you create your login page? Using Visual Studio 2005?

There really is not a lot of customizing that you can do with report manager.

In the past few times I have needed to customize, I just created an entire application to replace report manager.

Then used a combination of the web services and/or report viewer control.

I would think it is quite natural when implementing RS to give the reports
portal the company look and feel. Are there are other best practices
(besides customizing Home page) to give RS a local company feel. Probably
there are if you choose to develop stuff yourself.
With minimal portal development, what can be done to give users a good
Reporting Home Page.
Some documentation / response from Microsoft would be highly appreciated and
anticipated...

Customer Accounts Report

I am on security doubt on how to design a report that must show the accounts
of a customer.
I have an aspx page showing the customer info , then he must push a button a
see its accounts on a report generated by Reporting Services.
Obviously the report can not be accesed via a Customer parameters because
another users could see any customer 's accounts.
How can i solve it.
I am thinking in generating a temp table with a random id an pass it by
parameter, but it is only so as to reduce an intruder access.

If you are using ASP.NET you have more than one option:
1.- Storing in Sessions variables
2.- Using QueryString
3.- Using Server side code (static variables)
4.- Change the report viewer (passsing SOAP params)
The fact is the report params does not to be part of the URL you can easily
hide them using multiples techniques, depends how your app is designed you
may use some of them.

When a report is deployed , anyone (authenticated) can access to the report
and can access a report via URL and with the posibility of changing any
parameter value via URL.

It's an ASP.NET app that lets you recreate the entire look of the report
viewer. It also give you flexibilty in what you feed the report.
I was able to use this program and feed in my own parameters. The report
will display and no parameters are visible in the URL.
Look for the variable 'reportParameterValues2' in the code. It's a array
that stores the parameters for your report.
Hope this helps, or at least gets you started.

custom web app for reportviewer

Hi,

I am trying to develop a custom web page to display and generate our company reports.

It shoud have a login page, and then a general window with 2 or 3 frames (top frame with general info, left frame with a

dynamic list of all existing reports (eventually categorized by a certain word in the report title), and a center frame

that has initialy the company logo and after selecting a specific report displays the parameters and afterwards the

generated report).

Does anybody has some pointers or links on the web where some of this is a little bit documented.

I have dev skills in vb.net and know how to work with ssrs.

My web dev skills are intermediate.

All info, tips, hints are very welcome ...

code you need to write..

I think you can create login page and list of report..

For the 3rd frame.

keep 3 control there

1 image

2 panel with all the controls thath you need for parameter

3 reportviewer control (property visible = false and size (min that you want)

for 1 - you can initially keep image visible.

on click on list of report make it invicible and make the panel for parameter visible.

2) initially invisible as i said above while keeping it visible check for the parameters for the report that are needed and make thaem visible. everything else invisible.

( In my 10 reports I have kept name of the parameters same for same type like if i need to pull patientname and first visit date ..... so my report parameter is patienName, StartDate in 2 nd report date is i need Patientname with last visitdte

then parameter would be PatientName,last date.

in 3rd report i need patient visited between FirstDate and lastDate.. I would keep same parameter Name..

So for each parameter I hav one control.

So it would be easy to make them visible as per report name.

After that you need to set report to report viewer

than pass parameter values to report

than database login to report( if needed)

than make report viewer visible.

Custom Subscription Page

I have developed a custom subscription page that integrates with Active
Directory to allow searching for company employees and resolving their email
addresses. While I could certainly build a complete "My subscription" Site I
would like to just change the link to "New Subscription" on the Report
Subscriptions Tab and the My Subscriptions Page. Can this be done?

Unfortunately I've been dealing with a bunch of Production issues and have
not been able to check out your code suggestion.. I finally found a document
I was looking for in MSDN magazine by Dino Esposito where he writes a page
handler that intercepts the existing page handler without any of the original
code. When I get some time I'm going to try both options to see which is the
cleanest. :)

custom path for data files

I am about to install sql 2005 in a clustered scenario. I am reading the
installation notes and it says :
On the Cluster Group Selection page, select the group that contains the
drive you want to use for SQL Server from the Available Cluster Groups. The
selected cluster group is where the SQL Server virtual SQL Server resources
are placed. If you select the group containing the cluster quorum resource, a
warning is displayed recommending you do not install to the cluster quorum
resource. You can also specify a custom path for data files in the Data Files
field. To proceed, click Next.
My question is that I have two nodes both sharing D, E & QDrive if I select
the custom path option at this point in the installaion will I be able to
select D for databases and E for logs?

Thanks for this but I'm new at this and a little confused.
I have:
cluster group containing Q
group 0 containing D Drive (I would like the data files here)
group 1 containing E Drive (I would like the log files here)
When I went through the setup I was expecting to have the choice of
splitting the files but could only chose one cluster group so I chose cluster
group 0.
Now when I opened management studio to change the logs location I can only
see D, adding the E Drive to group 0 also does not allow me to see E drive
from management studio.
What am I missing?

Using the Cluster admin tool, take the SQL Service offline but leave the
rest of the group online. Right-click the SQL Service... Properties.
Advanced tab. Add the new disk as an item the SQL Service is dependent on.
Bring SQL back online.

Custom Parameter Page with Report Manager

Dear Everyone,

Suffice it to say, almost everyone who seriously uses (relies) reporting services hates the postbacks that the report parameter section does. It literally runs all queries that populates the report parameters. This will just not do.

We're thinking of creating a custom web page to either augment or replace the parameter section of the report. Our problem is that we dont know how to connect it to report manager in such a away that it will actually interact with the current instance of the report. Has anyone tried this at all? Does anyone have any idea on how to accomplish this?

The postbacks should only occur when a parameter has parameters that depend on it. If you are seeing post backs in other cases, this could be a bug. Keep in mind that expression based parameters are assumed to have dependencies on all parameters that are defined before them. I'm not sure how you would write your own parameters that would not require a post back (unless you know all combinations of parameter values and never expect the back-end data to change).

Report Manager is not extensiblie so there is no way replace this section of Report Manager.

Thanks for the reply. We understand that postbacks only occur on parameters with dependencies. But the thing that really is a head ache is when a post back occurs, all queries of all the parameters gets fired again in the server. Our reports have an average of 8 parameters. This means that when a post back occurs, all queries related to the 8 parameters (data set used in population) gets executed again making another round trip to the server. We're still hoping that this is a bug because for us, this is a major concern over the reporting services product and absolutely does not add any business value to the product.

Yes, we do re-execute all queries. The reason is we need to verify that the values is still valid.

We do realize that this is a pain point and I have opened a bug to track this issue. That is not a guarantee that it will change, but we will certainly look into alternative solutions. Thanks for bringing this issue to us.

Have you looked into using Report Execution Snapshots? For these we will store all the parameter queries so they will not be re-executed. Of course you data will not be live either so that may not be an option for you.

|||Yes, cascading parameters are all stored in the snapshot. You should not see any paramter queries run if the report is running from a snapshot execution. The problem is your limited to only change the parameters that are not in a query so I don't think it will solve your issue.

Custom Parameter Not Listed

I have an ASPNET application with forms auth which will have a page
that will list all the reports defined in the SQL Reporting Services
2005. This list is obtained using the ReportingService2005 web service.
In this page the user will select one report and will open it thru the
ReportViewer with all the report parameters ready to be set. Now, there
are some parameters that will not be shown but will be passed by the
ASPNET application such as the UserID.
Since the reports in SRS will be created by other people (not
controlled by the company I work in) we don't know exactly which
parameters they might need, that's why we want to send them several
parameters whether they need them or not (just in case).
I tried this but the SRS returned the error rsUnknownReportParameter.
Is there a way to override this, so the error is not raised and the
parameter accepted. Maybe a configuration in the web.config or
something like it.I just fixed it, but I dunno if this is the best solution. I just
connect to the Web Service ReportingService2005 and check if the
parameters I want to send are in the parameter list of the report thru
the method GetReportParameters.
I don't like doing two requests to the ReportServer, when it could be
managed in just one, but guess this is how I'll go.

Custom Paper Size

My body width is set to 10. My left and right margins are set to 0.5in. And my page width and height are set to 11in and 8.5in, respectively.

So in essence, I want to print my reports on Letter in Landscape mode.

Yet when I go to print the report and look at the properties, it shows as 215.9 x 279.4 mm Custom paper.

Any ideas?

May have found something. Even though my report is set to 11x8.5 with 0.5 margins (giving me 10in to work with), I found my header, body, and footer set to 10.0000001.

It seems that using snap to grid and the ruler for sizing and positioning add a infinitesmal value which throws off paper selection.

Custom Page Size

Is it possible to setup custom page size in crystal reports? I do have about 40 column and it is necessary to display and printing in report viewing. What I do now is I used A3 paper size & landscape. In report design, the page ruler at the top shows 23(inc / cm..not sure about this). Anyhow..can I adjust it to be more bigger than this? Currently the reports can generate the data as per requirement..but it look quite messy and bit cram. Kindly adviseYou need to install a printer driver for larger sized paper.

I did install the printer software. Adobe PDF creator..which is the software allowed me the option to choose A1 to A3 size. When I used A2 page size..it expand till 26 (page ruler) ..it look better than used a3 or A4 size. Unfortunatelly still quite messy.. so, I've changed to A1 size..and now I can resize the column and the data printing little bit nice. However..when tested it in report viewing..the error message come out 'Page too large' .. ayyo! Another problems come out.. hmmm what should I do? anybody can suggest me another printer software that can printing for larger size.

There are 3 groups in my report– grp1, grp2 and grp3, with grp1 at the top, grp2 in the middle and grp3 at the bottom. I need to insert a page break when the value of grp1 record becomes “abc”. Is this possible? If so, I will really appreciate if someone can let me know how.

I need to be able to print my footer at different heights.

Create 2 shared booleanvar footer_1 and footer_2.

You can manage these variables to show and hide the required footer. First footer_1:= true;
footer_2:=false;

after showing the firt footer or in first footer change the variables to
footer_1:=false;
footer_2:=true;

now your 2nd footer will show onward.

The goal is that if a user try to access a report when the ssrs is down, He won't see the RS general error but a custom notice from me.

If you are using report manager (which is an ASP.NET web application), I guess you can do that by configuring your custom error page in web.config file available in Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.X\Reporting Services\ReportManager folder. Set mode="on" for customErrors tag and define the custom error page as you do for any other ASP.NET web application.

You can use defaultRedirect attribute of customErrors tag to tell the application to go to another custom web page by default if any error occurs. Also you can define error pages for specific types of errors like 401, 402 etc. and add them as error tags inside this customErrors tag. En example would look like this:

Custom Code accessing Dataset

my problem is this ...i pass a parameter from an asp page to open a report which works fine, however the display name for the text box in the header of the report should be the description of the parameter not the parameter id

i would like to create a function in the custom code that passes the parameter id and returns the parameter description as the possible description values are dynamic and there are over 400 hardcoding the code is not an option

I'm not clear on what you are reffering to as "parameter description"? A report parameter will have three values accessible through either custom code or through a report expression: Value, Label, and IsMultiValue. If the "parameter description" is something defeined outside of the report you can access it in cusom code just as you could in any other .NET code.

I'm using the delegation (defautcredentialcache) to send the user
authentication to RS.
RS and my web application are on the same server.
this works fine in 2 cases:
* NT authentication used in both virtual directories (/reportserver & /
mycustomapp)
* Basic authentication used for /mycustomapp but NT authentication for
/reportserver
But I want to setup the Basic authentication for both the /reportserver & /
mycustomapp virtual folders.
I don't understand why using the default credential cache doesn't works.
my current work around is to detect if I'm in Basic authentication mode,
then a create a networkcredential object base on the current user login &
password.

now the only problem I have is this:
* Frontend custom app using Basic authentication
* Reportserver using both NTLM & Basic authentication
in this case, I send the username + password of the active user, but I
receive a permission error!
I think the system try to use the integrated security...

and password from that and passing those in your NetworkCredential object or
are you using DefaultCredentials?

method, but I could be wrong. Typically, the client and server will
negotiate based on what the server accepts and the client can provide.
What happens if you specify a domain in the NetworkCredential (or does the
AUTH_USER header already have a domain name like "domain\user" or a upn like
user@.domain.com?)?

well... nothing works, so I'm using my workaround.
which is creating a second "reportserver" virtual folder, where only basic
authentication is used, and then there is no problems.
I think RS prefer to use the NT authentication instead-of the basic
authentication.
